Spider-Man Comes to Marvel’s Cinematic Universe!

Sony Pictures Entertainment and Marvel Studios officially announced today that Sony is bringing Marvel into the amazing world of Spider-Man! Under a new deal, a new Spider-Man (not Andrew Garfield) will first appear in a currently-unspecified Marvel film within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sony Pictures will thereafter release the next installment of its $4 billion Spider-Man franchise, on July 28, 2017, in a film that will be co-produced by Kevin Feige and his expert team at Marvel and Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise launch for the studio 13 years ago. Together, they will collaborate on a new creative direction for the web slinger. Sony Pictures will continue to finance, distribute, own and have final creative control of the Spider-Man films.

Super Hero Hype

When it comes to comics, I’m a DC guy. Specifically, Superman and Justice League. But I love what Marvel Studios has been able to do with their Cinematic Universe as much as every other nerd. Rumors have persisted for quite a white that Sony (who owns the rights to Spider-Man) could work with Marvel Studios to bring Spider-Man to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Out of all the Marvel properties that Marvel Studios doesn’t own, Spider-Man is the biggest and most successful. So now it is official, Spider-Man is coming to Marvel Studios— in collaboration with Sony Pictures. I could not be more excited.

Martian Colonists

The hard part will not be staying alive but staying sane. You laugh now about your old AOL dial-up connection in college, but how about 20 minutes just to refresh your Twitter feed? You may be able to survive without oxygen, but can you live without bagels? Sex? Love? Our first colonists on Mars will have to be more than just brave and smart. They will have to be weird enough to handle extreme isolation.

Meet the people who have volunteered to die on Mars

Mars One is selecting people that will be the first interplanetary colonists on Mars. Their idea is to send people without the ability to return to Earth. I don’t know about you, but I couldn’t do it. And I’m an introvert. Unlike the article seems to imply, it isn’t about sex. Despite being an introvert and relishing the idea of a good recharge— which involves being alone— I don’t think I could go 21st century monk and retreat from civilization for the rest of my life.

Apple’s iOS 9 to Focus on Stability and Optimizations

For 2015, iOS 9, which is codenamed Stowe (after the ski resort in Vermont), is going to include a collection of under-the-hood improvements. Sources tell us that iOS 9 engineers are putting a “huge” focus on fixing bugs, maintaining stability, and boosting performance for the new operating system, rather than solely focusing on delivering major new feature additions. Apple will also continue to make efforts to keep the size of the OS and updates manageable, especially for the many millions of iOS device owners with 16GB devices.

9to5Mac

If this turns out to be true, it will make a lot of people happy. Stability is one of the biggest complaints in the last year and I have personally heard it from a lot of friends that are Apple fans and developers.

Apple World Today

Welcome to Apple World Today. While this is a new website, the roots of it go back ten years to the founding of a site called The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW). That site grew out of Weblogs, Inc., which had a large stable of websites including Engadget, Joystiq, and Autoblog. Weblogs, Inc. was acquired in 2005 by Aol, which regrettably decided to discontinue some of the "smaller" websites in the last week. TUAW was down, but not out.

Welcome to Apple World Today

When I worked at Apple back between 2005 and 2007 I cannot tell you how frequently TUAW was open in the back of the store. Apple didn’t provide us with more information than we needed to sell their products, so sites like TUAW allowed us to do more research, read reviews of accessories, and learn more about the Apple world. Last week, Aol shut down TUAW, which was a major punch to the gut of many in the tech world, but today the team that was let go from TUAW is now launching Apple World Today (AWT).

What makes me happy is this:

Our biggest desire is to avoid the banner ad hell that most websites, especially those owned by our former employer, have become. That's why we're looking at doing two things: relying on a few sponsors who are depending on you to go out and buy their product to keep them afloat and supporting AWT, and working that Patreon crowdfunding. Let's throw the advertisers back into the trash heap and take back our internet; make Apple World Today your "public radio" of Apple news and reviews!

RIP Tech Blogging; Welcome to the Future

Ads on the web are becoming simply rediculous. Sites like MacStories and Beautiful Pixels avoid annoying ads by leveraging sponsorships and their readership. It’s great to see another blog launching with the same intent.

For anyone that has followed TUAW over the years, Apple World Today is definitely one to follow.

Pure and Utter Arrogance

“I have not spoken with [the president] about the reaction to the remarks, but I know that there is a failed presidential candidate and an RNC chairman from the past who have criticized us,” Schultz said. “But I don’t have a response to either of those two people.”

This is what is called an ad hominem argument, Mr. Schultz. You might think you can just blow off the remarks of anyone that disagrees with you or the president, but to do so is pure and utter arrogance.

Armenia and Down Syndrome

"When I walked into the room they all turned to me and said 'Leo has Down syndrome," he told ABC News. "I had a few moments of shock."

[...]

"I got the ultimatum right then," he said. "She told me if I kept him then we would get a divorce."

God. The brainwashing it takes to make a mother so cold boggles my mind. Apparently much of Eastern Europe just abandons children with disorders.

In this tiny, landlocked country renowned for its' hospitality, scores of babies are abandoned each year, for reasons ranging from physical or intellectual disabilities and minor 'imperfections'. This practice of abandoning children due to disabilities is unfortunately widespread throughout Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union, resulting from a culture which refused to accept human defects. Health professionals estimate that 98% of all Down Syndrome babies born in Armenia are abandoned, every year. These abandoned babies are often placed in squalid orphanages, where they live and die, rejected and forgotten by society.

Bring Leo Home

Leo’s Dad made a tough but, in my opinion, right choice to keep his son, but in doing so he lost his wife.

Humanity can be really ugly. While Armenia abandons 98% of Down Syndrome babies, the UK kills 92% of Down Syndrome babies before they are even born. The same goes in the US, where 92% of women that find out before their baby is born abort. When will we look back at what we’ve done as a people and see the premeditated genocide of babies as wrong?

Franklin Graham’s Fantastic Response to President Obama

Today at the National Prayer Breakfast, the President implied that what ISIS is doing is equivalent to what happened over 1000 years ago during the Crusades and the Inquisition. Mr. President--Many people in history have used the name of Jesus Christ to accomplish evil things for their own desires. But Jesus taught peace, love and forgiveness. He came to give His life for the sins of mankind, not to take life. Mohammad on the contrary was a warrior and killed many innocent people. True followers of Christ emulate Christ—true followers of Mohammed emulate Mohammed.

Moral Equivalency

If you want to talk about the perversion of religion, don’t pervert the facts.

I don’t like MSNBC. Typically. But this rant is spot on. That he knows that history shows the Crusades were largely in response to Muslims brutally taking over their lands is amazing to me. That whoever wrote President Obama’s speech didn’t know this astounds me.

This is something I shared on Facebook earlier today. Yet we are frequently reminded by history revisionists that the Christians committed atrocities such as the Crusades. While atrocities certainly happened, as with any war, it doesn’t come close to comparing to the Hell reaped by the Muslims across Europe that they were trying to stop.
